Horse Of Bells Reviews
3.5/5 StarsEven with the confusing blurb, I persevered and read the book. YAY me! I have to warn readers first that THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS.The story showcases two couples Caolan and the "Stranger"; and Donal and the Dark Prince. The story was typical so far, Caolan meeting the stranger in the woods while hunting and saving him from being skewered by a wild boar -- falls in love at first sight, shares a kiss, and then makes a promise to meet the stranger once a month in the woods and not taking any lover but him.Enter evil stepmother Queen Doireann plotting for the crown etc etc. For their safety they were sent away. Caolan however, was crushed since he will not be able to fulfill his promise to meet the stranger in the woods as was agreed.A few months later, they then received fake summons to return to the palace early by the Queen. Donal was then tricked by the Queen to go to a quest/geis to steal the Horse of Bells from the Dark Prince with a reputation of killing whoever tries to steal the beast and none have succeeded. They met the same stranger again in the woods and he volunteered to help them steal the prized horse. Along the journey, Caolan rekindled their love (lust?) with the stranger (Theif). They were captured as they were stealing the prized beast. Anyways, they found out that the stranger was the thief who saved the Dark prince's life when he was a baby. They were then set free and treated like guests in the palace.----Now, I got a little leery on why the older prince got and fell for his captor, the Dark Prince. It was like they were saying "I love you's" and professing their undying love hours after they have been captured?! Where did that come from? Where was the Dark Prince coming from? What did he know of Prince Donal that he fell in love right away? Love at first sight again? Would that be enough to say that there would be no other for him? Hmmmm. I highly doubted this turn of events. At least, with the other couple, they had a few months to stew the "love at first sight" to full blown eternal love. The lot decided to return to the Kingdom and shed light to the Queen's evil machinations...fought, and succeeded. With a bit of quick thinking by Caolan, he saved the Dark Prince from demise. Then comes the King's decision that a lowly theif is not a suitable partner for a prince. He discouraged him and made him leave Caolan. Because of this, the Prince Caolan stood up to his father for the very first time and shows that he is a man. With the help of the Horse of bells, the Prince Caolan was able to locate his lover and again professed his undying love, made up etc etc.The story ended with both the Princes betrothed to their lovers and The Theif being made Duke. For me, it was wrapped up a little hurriedly. The medieval setting was well visualized. There was action, a thirst to prove oneself and hot love-scenes. With the exception of a few parts on the love build-up which were highly doubtful and unlikely; overall, it was a decent read.
4 star review by DanThis is the first book I’ve read by this author. I enjoyed the writing style, character development and storyline. As the story begins Queen Fidelma is dying. Her dying request to her husband, King Somerled, is to send their two sons to safety from her cousin, the evil Doireann. Once he leaves the room Doireann comes in and completes her ongoing poisoning of the Queen. The King has already fallen for Doireann’s conniving ways and marries her right away. She convinces him to ignore Fidelma’s plea.Prince Donal, and his brother Prince Caolan are hunting for a wild boar as the story begins. Caolan has decided to hunt with only his bow, forgoing the standard practice of using dogs as part of the hunt. Prince Donal and an attendant go one way and Caolan the other. When Caolan spots the boar he draws back his bow and his bow snaps in half, propelling Caolan to the ground where his leg is gored by the boar. From out of nowhere arrows fly and kill the boar and then the man who fired the arrows steps out and saves Caolan’s life. Sparks fly immediately and the two kiss. Caolan vows to return monthly to the same spot and the man disappears into the woods just as Donal rides up.One thing leads to another, and Caolan is unable to fulfill his pledge. Nearly a year later, the evil Queen Dorieann finds a way to trap Donal into a geas. He must steal the Horse of Bells from the neighboring Kingdom’s prince. Everyone who has ever tried, has died. When Caolan accompanies him, they don’t realize that events will arise that will change both their lives forever. How will they get along with the mysterious “Traveler” who appears to despise Caolan. What will happen when they get to the neighboring Kingdom? Is there any stopping the evil Queen Dorieann?I liked the story. It was kind of like a fairytale. I would have liked it much more if it were longer with more details. I think the story, plot and characters could easily have supported a full length novel. Not to say the story isn’t complete, because it is. I just enjoyed it so much, that I wish it were longer! I recommend the story. Pick it up today if you’re in the mood for a slightly smutty fairytale.A copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review. 4 HeartsReview written for MM Good Book Reviewshttp://mmgoodbookreviews.wordpress.com/While out hunting Caolan is rescued by a mysterious stranger and Caolan makes a pact with him because of the effect the stranger has on him, but Caolan has to break his pact, but swears to stick by his oath. Donal and Caolan are princes who are sent to safety after an attempt on Caolan’s life, their step-mother is suspected and Donal won’t risk losing his brother. Deceived into returning home Donal is tricked into a geis, an honour-bound quest, it is a geis that will be impossible to fulfil, but Donal and his brother set off for the Dark Prince’s land to obtain the Horse of Bells, picking up the Traveller along the way. This is another great fantasy from Pelaam, which feels like it should be based on a myth. Both Caolan and Donal are great characters who are wonderful brothers, Caolan is the younger brother and Donal will do anything for him. Donal is strong in body whereas Caolan is stronger in mind, and Donal has always tried to protect his younger brother from their father’s criticisms. When they set out on their quest and Caolan meets up with his lost love it gives them hope that they will make it to the Dark Prince’s land, but it isn’t easy to obtain a horse who doesn’t want to be obtained. This story is wonderfully written with a couple of stories entwined, we have two brothers setting out on a quest that is dangerous and finding their true loves, we have an attempted uprising which nearly ends in sorrow and we have a mystical horse that has a mind of its own. The world building is quite good and you get a great feel for the world and circumstances, there is a very heavy medieval feel to the surroundings and you get a strong sense of whimsical myth throughout the entire book. The sexual encounters that we see between the two couples are quite sensual and loving; both couples are well suited and will do the right thing by the ones they love.I really enjoyed this story as I do like a good medieval feeling fantasy and this one has the added bonus of having two love stories, with danger and sacrifice. Caolan makes everyone see him as a man and Donal shows why he will be king. I have to recommend this to those who love fantasy, adventure, great characters, an interesting storyline and a very happy blissful ending.
The characters are very convincing as they face each challenge of the journey with honor and honesty as they find true love and stand up to anyone or anything that tries to block their way. Pelaam has definitely taken a classic HEA and given it new life with a wickedly different twist on the usual princess finding true love with it being TWO princes that do the same. I really like the way the author doesn't make this just another cliche tale and brings a lovely freshness to her craft. The story flows smoothly from beginning to end was very easy to follow. I really enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to anyone looking for an entertaining tale that is above and beyond the average fairy tale. Please see Trish's complete review on February 12, 2013 at http://mrsconditreadsbooks.com/index....
Woohoo, we have two couples! o(〃＾▽＾〃)o Berach x Caolan and Tuathal x Donal. I liked both couples."He was aware of the Horse of Bells stepping behind them with bells chiming jauntily as if he was their entourage". Yes, the horse approves. XD For once, I will forgive the insta-love. (◡‿◡✿)
Rating: 3 starsA adult fairy tale about two princes that falls short of being charming.Read my full review here http://wp.me/p220KL-VEReview website: http://scatteredthoughtsandroguewords...
The blurb sounds really bad but I have hope.
