“I’m not the protagonist of a novel or anything. I’m a college student who likes to read, like you could find anywhere. But.. if, for argument’s sake, you were to write a story with me in the lead role, it would certainly be a TRAGEDY!”This is so PAINFUL!! A real TRAGEDY!This manga is about a normal boy "Kaneki" that had an organ transplantation from a "Ghoul".. then he finds that he can't act normal as he was. He became a "ghoul" after the operation!!He finds many difficulties in his life, he can't accept himself as a ghoul. He can't eat any normal food anymore! But he don't want to harm any human. He don't want to eat humans!

This is probably THE most amazing manga of the century. Inspired by Takatsuki Sen's "Egg of the Black Goat," it shows the mental and physical progress of a once innocent boy into something much darker but still retaining some of the gentleness of his former self. The literary analogies and intriguing plotline and battles scenes come together to make this one of the most eloquent action mangas to ever exist. There are deep underlying meanings in this manga that can interest any level of reader. I highly recommend this compelling manga!

The Goo Goo MuckMeh. Weren’t teenagers supposed to fall prey to vampires or turn into werewolves when they get horny? Must be getting old… It’s a zombie world now, so our shy, angst-ridden protagonist falls for - you guessed it - a sexy, well-adjusted, dolled-up ghoul... and, well, let’s just say: somehow ends up with her organs in his body. Next thing our hero knows, he craves human flesh - bummer!Yep, it’s all a bit clunky, contrived and generic - and the gore doesn’t really change that. Tokyo Ghoul isn't awful, mind you, just a little boring. I personally liked the story better when told by the Cramps:Oh when the sun goes down and the moon comes upI turn into a teenage goo-goo muckYeah I cruise through the city and I roam the streetsLooking for something that is nice to eatYou better duck, when I show up, the goo-goo muck.I'm a night headhunter looking for some headWith a way-out body underneath that headYeah I'll get you baby with a little luckCuz I'm a teenage tiger and a goo-goo muckYou better duck, when I show up, the goo-goo muck.Yeah the city is a jungle and I'm a beastI'm a teenage tiger looking for a feastYeah I want the most but I'll take the leastCuz I'm a goo-goo muck tiger and a teenage beastYou better duck, when I show up, the goo-goo muck.

I definitely see why so many people like this manga!I liked the MC, though I wanted to punch some sense into him sometimes and tell him to stop crying and do something with his life . . . but then again, the guy just became something he thinks as a ‘monster’ so I can understand why it's so hard for him to be at peace with himself.I'm pretty excited to read the next volumes!3.75

Great start to a series. Even though I already knew what was going to happen ('cause I've seen the anime) it was still really interesting to read. The art style kind of reminded me of art style of Attack on Titan, but to me, that was a good thing, because I love AoT's art style. Can't wait to continue on with the series and see where the story will go.

this manga is interesting. a world that humans and Ghouls lives together, even the human's knows there existence. but they act like they don't even exist the ghouls i mean. even though the ghouls eat the human flesh. humans just ignores them.but one day, a kid named kaneke, sorry if i said his name wrong. anyway. this interesting kid, even though he's not that interesting at the beginning. but when he turns to half ghoul. thing would turn upside down for him. it would be hard for him to except his ghoul side. i won't explain how things turn out this way. just read it. it's worth every comic lover time.

3.5 starsMy journey into everything Japanese continues! Or: I absolutely adored the anime when I watched it, and since I needed more of this amazing universe in my life while waiting for the next season, I moved on to the manga. The art is incredible, and even though this is just the beginning, the story is the one I already know and love - eerie, bloody and dramatic. Bonus content. Things that prove that Kaneki Ken is totally my soulmate:• He is a giant book nerd that spends his whole time reading obscure books and generally avoiding people.• His friend Hide, about Kaneki: "You're so skinny, and all you do is read incomprehensible books!" (Same, Kaneki... Same.) • He's in his first year at university, and he's studying Literature. • His interests are: reading, language, intellectual people and hamburgers. Can this guy get any more relatable? • He's a fairly nice guy, but goes batshit whenever someone dares to lay a finger on his friends. • He loves coffee. Duh. I think it goes without saying, but of course I recommend Tokyo Ghoul. It's one of my favorite anime, and it's the first manga I've read in a long time. If action, great character development, horror, bloody battles and unbearable dramatic tension are your thing, then you're in for a real treat.

Tokyo Girl is the name of a Japanese television drama series that aired on 2008- 2009. This horror manga is not about this tv program. It is also not about this Ace of Base song: also has nothing to do with David Bowie's "China Girl."It is a ghoul story, though it is also a girl story, a girl named Rize a shy boy named Kaneki has a crush on. Then things get messy. K. survives the date with Rize, but with surgery, so now he's a half-ghoul. He lives in both the human and ghoul worlds. And because he is part-ghoul, he must consume human flesh to survive. The story is supposed to be gorey, and it is, a bit, but you're talkin' here to a guy that has read Garth Ennis's Crossed, so I am somewhat damaged in that respect. I read it because my former student said it was her favorite manga horror series. I thought it was pretty good. I liked the references to how may be transformed like Gregor in Kafka's "Metamorphosis." So it is a "coming of age" story, transformation, but not in the Little House on the Prairie way, sorry.

I’m not the protagonist of a novel or anything…I’m a college student who likes to read, like you could find anywhere. But… if, for argument’s sake, you were to write a story with me in the lead role, it would certainly be… a tragedy.-Kaneki Ken, Ch 1This is the story of an average college guy, who finds himself attacked by a ghoul, creatures with supernatural strength, speed and abilities and who only eat human flesh. As fate has it, our guy Kaneki ends up in a hospital with the organs of one of these ghouls transplanted in him. Say Hi to part-ghoul, part-human, our hero, the Tokyo Ghoul. So that's the basic premise of it. I gave it 4-star now. But I remember loving it BEYOND anything when i read it some 2-3 years ago. Maybe I have grown-up. Maybe I have changed. Anyway, its still a great manga, just not a 5-star.The plot in one sense is very mainstream. The concept is new with ghouls and all. But we have all read way too many books with a goodhearted "average-human" hero who becomes a half-something (think: vampire, werewolf, demon, oni, zombie. Its endless) and is forced to change his perspective on what's right and what's wrong. Oh the internal struggle, the walk on the edge of humanity, the upheaval of morals. Add: an interesting set of characters to teach our guy how to live his new life. A bunch of lunatic villains. A lot of gore and blood and broken spines. You have it.But don't we all just love that to happen? I, for one, CANNOT RESIST it when the principles of a person are questioned in a story. When he/she has to find a new moral-code to live with. I like it when my own principles are challenged, as a reader. That, or maybe I am just sadistic. Because really, it is SO easy to be righteous and self-justified when you have the luxury to be so. What would you do when nature itself is forcing you become something you are not. Like eating human flesh, for example. You can't fight nature. If you do, you would most likely end up dead. Now that Kaneki has become a monster, how will he retain some part of his former gentle self? Also, its the writing. The prose is amazing. And I am only reading the badly translated version. It must be simply beautiful in the original language. The whole story is loosely inspired from "Egg of the Black Goat", a novel by Takatsuki Sen, an author Kaneki is a fan of. There are numerous times when Kaneki himself draws parallels between his life and the life of the "egg" in the book. The art. I didn't like it. Its unnecessarily ugly and grotesque, but I guess a lot of people like it that way. I don't mind violence and blood. But I do mind this:uhh..No.Anyway, the action scenes are very well drawn. You actually know whats going on in this manga. Most of the other manga, i half-understand and half-assume and then wait for the anime to come out. So that's great. (Also, the anime for this series is AMAZING! Go watch it. Run Along.)One of the other main characters introduced in this volume is Touka. i so so SO wanted to like her, but I just couldn't. She definitely has all the qualities that I tend to like in my heroines. Short-hair, angst and she's powerful too! But all that angst seems so pointless. I know she is a ghoul who is hunted by humans and life is difficult and she is young. But still I CANNOT empathise with her on a basic level. Am I too heartless? She's so generic, it breaks my heart. And I am okaaaay with generic, even Kaneki is generic! But dayum, she just didn't do it for me. Too bad.I really like the name of this series. Tokyo Ghoul. :D Seems a little poetic. The mangaka has done a LOT of homework to make this story, clearly. Its shows on every page. Even the chapter titles are bad ass and so on-point. Its definitely a great piece of work, worth coming back to again and again.

Up until now, it's pretty faithful to the anime! I don't remember it well, but I think this entire volume happened in episode 1 and perhaps 2 as well. It's really interesting to see Kaneki and the parallels between him and the books he read. Also Nishiki seems more evil here than I remember him. Hide is precious, he needs to be protected forever!I hope that by reading the manga I get a deeper understanding of Kaneki and his reasons, but I'm expecting things to start shifting from the anime only around the second season and the volume that corresponds to it.So far so good! A great start that isn't boring in any way!

Having watched the anime it was high time I started reading the manga. How could I ever not enjoy a plot where the main protagonist is a person who loves to read and hates social events? Even though I knew what was going to happen I stilllovedit. It's a great start for an awesome manga! Oh I cannot wait to read more and find out what the hell happens next 'cause I've been told things get messy! Have I already mentioned that it is epic?

you may not be a ghoul, but you're not a human either. there's no place for someone who can't decide between being one or the other. And so the misery begins. I watched the first season and ... Have been ... avoiding season two. Because I know. I know.I don't want to go through that pain.So naturally I start the manga.

Actual Rating: 4.5 Stars!--I've been meaning to either start reading the manga or start watching the anime for a while now, but for whatever reason I kept putting it off. I FINALLY picked this one up and read it!I really like the concept of this story and the content seems to be something that I'll really enjoy if I continue with the series!I just have one question, should I continue by reading the manga or by watching the anime?! I'd love your opinions!

"You may not be a ghoul, but you're not a human either. There's no place for someone who can't decide between being one or the other" I loved this manga. Having not watched the anime of Tokyo Ghoul, I was rather excited to get my hands on the first book.Firstly, the artwork in this is absolutely incredible. It is fantastically dramatic, dark and eerie. The battles are intense, bloody and the entire book overall, is action packed. The main protagonist is an individual that totally loves reading and despises attending social events. How the hell, could I NOT love this story?! I also love complex characters, and I seem to have this right here in this story. The fact that someone is half human, half ghoul, is enough on its own, for me to keep my enthusiasm high for this grand series.

I wanted to read some more manga so i just picked up a few of the most obvious ones, if you have any recommendations lemme know thanks! I did quite like this one, it's interesting enough and the artwork is really cool too just when the story starts really getting anywhere it ends so i just could have done with a bit more. You don't really find out too much from this but it's a pretty decent introduction to the story and it's worth picking up.

I picked up this title because my teenage daughter is a huge fan and I'm always amused to see what makes the kids happy these days. I'm glad I did but I'm not overwhelmingly impressed. It was a worthwhile 35 minutes though. The nutshell view on this is that it's essentially along the lines of the typical vampire/werewolf/undead genre novel. Outsider to the group goes through a transformation and becomes an insider and now must adjust to a new life. Again, fairly standard stuff. To the positive, the novel is fast-paced and graphically stunning. Despite being in black and white the action is extreme and evocative. You can very quickly begin to feel for the characters and their plight within the story. The pages race by at a frantic pace. To the negative, I suspect this is coming in future novels but I don't quite see the moral themes of the story yet. We have only the vaguest hints of the standard struggle between good and evil and the standard motif of "is evil really as bad as we perceive it to be?" but I'm sure that will come more to light in the future. In summary, nothing terribly original as yet from an overarching narrative perspective but the series is young and may very well grow into itself.PS: I was NOT provided a review copy by the publisher but I would certainly welcome the opportunity to review titles in this realm in the future.-- Rob SlavenFacebook:

This is the first Manga that I've read and I'm so glad because I completely loved it. I especially admired the artwork, at some pages I literally stopped to stare at the page because I am a person who appreciates art, especially in graphic novels.I thought the story was really interesting, College Student Ken Kaneki goes on a date with a girl he has a crush on, only to end up in the hospital, finding himself half human and half… ghoul. He's a half-ghoul hybrid, technically, and that's pretty fucking cool. (but then gross…) There were a few surprising moments, which was also a reason I enjoyed it so much.Something I also thought was interesting, was how Kaneki felt alone, and how he was a book nerd, and didn't care either. He used some of his knowledge of some books he read to help his… urmm… situations.I admire Nagachika's loyalty and observations throughout the book, he really does seem like a good friend, worried when Kenaki was acting weird, and encouraged him to eat when he looked weak and literally wasn't eating anything for days.I'm already looking forward to the next volumes of Tokyo Ghoul, and am excited to know more about Touka and more about the Ghouls, and how Kenaki will take it, especially how Nagachika will react.Overall, I would say this is a successful start to my Manga collection.
