What a mess. Neggers is hit or miss for me and this was definitely a miss. The best developed character was one of the villains. The hero was a condescending, patronizing ass though he did improve slightly near the end. The heroine was bland. The most interesting characters were the secondary ones. A lot of the story didn't make sense and the romance was a dud as I never felt the attraction between them or believed in it. Neggers did make effective use of the Vermont setting. I'm curious about the overall series arc but I doubt if I'll continue with the series.

Carla Neggers left me disappointed in “Cold Pursuit”. I felt like I was watching a well-known play that was being produced badly. The main characters Elijah Cameron and Jo Harper felt stiff and failed to connect to this reader. The supporting characters even more so, there weren’t many redeeming qualities in this bunch, especially the emotionally uncertain Nora Asher, who should have garnered the readers compassion, did not, at 19 she behaved more like a spoiled 14 year old pre-adolescent, not the young woman she was supposed to be. The only character that showed more than one dimension was one of the adversary’s; Melanie Kendall. Although a killer, Melanie showed more human emotions than any of the others, her character had depth, sincerity and was well written. The schematics and the intricacy of this mystery itself is well thought out and complete, it was the characterization that failed to carry this out to completion. I am a fan of Carla Neggers and will continue to recommend her books…..just not this one….it has simply fallen short of expectations.

Well written chick lit. The heroine is a Secret Service Agent who is on leave following being the brunt of a prank by the V.P.'s son. The hero is her ex who is Special Forces and home after a serious injury. They are both in their home town in Vermont in winter and both are competent outdoors survivors. The plot deals with assassins, young people who are running from realities they don't like and the coming together of both.

My first exposure to this author, highly recommend her books! Very well written, easy to follow, lots of action, angst, some teenage angst tossed in, and corruption flowing freely. The story mainly takes place in Black Falls, Vermont with some scenes taking place in Washington, DC. Secret Service, local cops, veteran reporter, and army and SEAL veterans from Afghanistan. Great meetings of the minds. Some romance with a hot scene or two.4.5 stars and 2 thumbs up.

I thought Cold Pursuit was well-written, but it just didn't grab my interest or attention. I made myself finish it, but I realized half-way through that I really didn't care about the characters at all. I will probably try one of Neggers' other works, though.

With all the back stories, this felt like a sequel to a book I hadn't read. There was a fair amount of action and suspense... though no questions get answered! The ending... there isn't one!

A dry, removed writing style combined with laconic Vermont-dwelling characters left me feeling disintered. Not bad, but not gripping. It should have been gripping.

Secret Service agent Jo Harper is home in the mountains of Black Falls, Vermont after an embarrassing incident involving the vice-president's son. When the step-daughter of a murdered ambassador goes missing, Jo joins the search, which places her right in the line of fire from Elijah Cameron-hometown boy, military training, mountain rescue experience, and ex-boyfriend. Will the two be able to put aside their differences and work together to find the missing teen? And why does Elijah believe the girl isn't just lost, but on the run?

It was fine. Kinda slogged along. No real surprises as a thriller-type mystery novel and the romance was not very compelling.

There are a LOT of people in this book and many of them factor in the other two books in this series, so rather than a regular synopsis, I'm including a list of characters. There may be some mild spoilers so I'm hiding them. The thing to remember is that this is a well-written book well worth reading (and re-reading)(view spoiler)[Drew Cameron-The patriarch of the family, his death, from hypothermia on the mountain he loved, sets off the series of events that follow.Jo Harper-a Secret Service agent who was caught on tape giving the Vice President’s youngest son what-for after a prank gone wrong. She is back in Black Falls, Vermont to hide out until the dust dies down, and to figure out why Drew Cameron left his cabins to her and not his three sons or daughter. He was the one that had caught her and Elijah in the cabins fifteen years before causing the breakup of their relationship.Elijah Cameron- Green Beret back from Afghanistan, he doesn’t seem averse to renewing the relationship. He's been letting NorahA.J. Cameron-Elijah’s brother and owner of the local lodge with his wife Lauren and their two kids.Norah Asher- Eighteen-year-old daughter of a prominent D. C. politician, her stepfather (her father’s best friend, it’s repeated over and over that it was astonishing that they stayed friends after Ambassador Bruni and her mother had an affair and subsequently divorced their spouses to marry) is the man who’s been killed. She wonders whether she might be the next target. She fell in love with Vermont and is taking a year off from college to experience “real life.”Thomas Asher-Norah’s father. He’s sort of a big-wig who was supposed to be meeting Ambassador Bruni when the man got run over. He doesn’t know what their meeting was for but instinctively hid the fact that he was there.Melanie Kendall-Engaged to Thomas Asher, she hasn’t won the affection of Norah. She has some pretty big secrets of her own.Kyle Rigby-Friend of Melanie (view spoiler)[who is a hitman and has partnered with Melanie for the past year for a lucrative time killing (hide spoiler)]Devon Shay-Eighteen-year-old, Black Falls native. He’s involved with Norah Asher and suspected of taking money from around town.Charlie O’Neal-The vice president’s genius, sixteen-year-old son. He’s been doing some research of his own and poking his nose into events as well.Mark Frankona- Jo's (former?) boss at the Secret Service. Seems to have his pulse on everything that's going on but keeps most of it to himself.Ryan ‘Grit’ Taylor-Former SEAL who lost a leg and his friend Moose (who still hangs around) in the same firefight that Elijah got shot. He’s helping Elijah dig up information on the Ambassador’s death.Myra Smith-a fiftyish(?) reporter who used to be an excellent war reporter but has fallen into the bottle. She has glommed onto Grit and seems to know more than she is sharing.Lowell and Vivian Whittaker-own the property where Norah is staying. They were friends with Alex Bruni and Norah’s mother. They also invited Norah and her father to stay at their guesthouse, a stay which prompted Thomas meeting Melanie. (hide spoiler)]

This was a good mystery but some items left me puzzled. Also, the romance could have been better explained and developed.REVIEWER’S OPINION:There were many secrets kept by many people which did not unravel until toward the end of the book. There were still some unsolved secrets at the end, some of them probably to continue in a sequel. Other unresolved items frustrated me and could have been answered better in the book. I describe them in Spoilers below. I would have preferred more romantic development of the relationship between Jo and Elijah. We are told they were in love as teenagers and then separated. The main story begins 15 years later, where their paths cross and the relationship continues as if it had never stopped.STORY BRIEF:Jo and Elijah were in love as teens. Elijah’s dad kicked him out of the house at age 19, and Elijah spent the next 15 years in the military. He comes home to Black Falls to recuperate from an injury and to investigate his father’s recent death. Jo became a secret service agent in Washington, D.C. She returns to Black Falls on a short-term leave. Alex is killed, and his stepdaughter Nora fears for her life. Nora has been living in Black Falls. She packs a tent and hiking gear and plans to hide in the nearby mountains. Jo and Elijah try to find her.DATA:Story length: 368 pages. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 4. Total number of sex scene pages: 9. Setting: current day Black Falls, Vermont area and Washington D.C. Copyright: 2008. Genre: romantic mystery suspense.CAUTION SPOILERS:IF YOU ARE THINKING OF READING THE BOOK, THEN DO NOT READ BELOW. IT GIVES AWAY SOME OF THE STORY.I was confused as to (1) why Elijah never answered Jo’s letters 15 years ago and (2) why he proposed to her 15 years later, after being together for just a few days. I wished the author developed the relationship more. I never understood why Jo and Scott didn’t get along. I wish the author had a better explanation as to why Nora believed Melanie was bad. Instead, the author said it was Nora’s intuition. I wanted to know why Devin didn’t trust Elijah. Elijah and his brother had been good to Devin. Myrtle was an interesting character, but I wanted to know more about why her love was killed. At the end of the book, I still didn’t know why all the deaths had occurred, other than some people “knew too much,” but about what I didn’t know. Nora definitely didn’t know anything, so I wanted to know why the assassins wanted to kill her.

This was the first Carla Neggers book I read. It was action-packed and kept your interest throughout. I thought I missed who the masterminds of the killing group were too. It still wasn't real clear how Drew Camerson was connected specifically to these bad guys and as to why he was a threat to this group. Also, it wasn't quite clear why Ambassador Bruni was such a threat to this group. I loved it when Elijah asked Jo to marry him after 15 years of being separated and each having at risk jobs, Elijah Special Forces in Afghanistan and Jo Harper as Secret Service. Both of their characters had been developed because of the no-nonsense attitudes they had to have working in their particular fields. They had a lot of chemistry in their teens and there was plenty of chemistry once they met up again in Black Falls, Vermont. They were tough, physically fit and sharp, enough to make sparks, the caustic kind. Between the chemistry and the enjoyment of sparring with one another this was enough to open the door to realization that they still loved each other. I also enjoyed reading about the region in Vermont. I've never been there and never thought about Vermont having mountainous areas. Sounds like a rugged area where a combination of down to earth people live while at the same time draws the elites for a get away.

This was my first book by Carla Neggers, who is apparently quite a popular author of romantic suspense. I read it because it was handy and I was looking for something light, but I have to say I was really disappointed. The 'romantic' part of the book was rather ordinary, and was pretty much as I expected, but the 'suspense' part was completely lacking. The book felt really padded to me, probably because the plot was so thin it didn't take up a whole book. The secondary characters (with a couple of exceptions) weren't particularly likable or interesting. In fact, the reader is aware of who the 'bad guys' are throughout the book, and not only are there no surprises, the ending just fizzles out into nothing. The questions raised about what's really going on --- the reasons behind the killings, who's actually calling the shots, who made that fateful cell phone call, how the town of Black Falls is involved --- are endlessly pondered by the characters, but absolutely nothing is resolved or explained. I realize that this book is the first of a series about these characters in Black Falls, and is therefore leading into the next one, but in cases like that I do expect the plot of the first book to be resolved. As it is, I have no desire to continue the saga. The lack of any conclusion, even a far-fetched one, took this from 2 stars to 1.

An American ambassador had been killed and his stepdaughter is fleeing from an unknown elusive threat in Black Falls, Vermont. Jo Harper is a Secret Service agent on leave in her home town of Black Falls for an embarrassing incident with the Vice President’s genius teenage son. The boy who Jo loved as a teenager and left her to go into the army, Elijah Cameron, has survived being shot and has also returned to Black Falls to recuperate. But something is going on in Black Falls...Elijah’s father has died on the mountain and he is determined to find out whether it was an accident…or murder. Jo and Elijah’s paths cross and they combine forces to discover the truth behind the deaths. While I liked the chemistry between Jo & Elijah, there were a lot of threads in Cold Pursuit, some of which I thought were unlikely or farfetched or seemed to cut off abruptly. The dialogue between characters Myrtle, Grit & Moose was often choppy and staccato. I liked that the story left an open ending indicating the start of a series. There were a few times with Jo and Elijah where the storyline duplicated itself, crossing paths numerous times in the first day they see each other, saying the same things after similar events. Anyways, I liked the characters but was not truly engaged in the story.

This book for me was perfect I had no idea who the killers were till Carla wanted everyone to know. I love Carla's writing style, she writes the characters in such a way that you can see them with perfect clarity. Jo is this kick ass Secret Service Agent and after a miss hap with the VP son she is sent back home till things cool off. I think the way Jo acted through out the book was important even when she was a little to the point. She is the type of person that will give it to you straight even if you dont want to hear it. Her only problem with being back home is that the boy/man now that broke her heart when she was a kid lives next door and things kind of get hot between the two of them.Elijah is this sexy Green Bret he has all the right moves. Elijah has just recovered from being shot and now that he is back on his feet he is going to find out who killed his father even with the distraction of Jo next door he cant let he fathers kill go free. As Jo and Elijah get closer to the kill they get closer too. There are ups and downs twists and turns Cold Pursuit keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat.

A fellow goodreader who seems to like the same books as me had this on her list so I thought I'd give it a go.Very nice read. It's a solid page turner. I really like her characters and the little quirks she works in. I will be adding her to my author list and look forward to more of her books.Plot - We have a missing stepdaughter daughter of an ambassador, a victim of a hit and run himself. Unanswered question in the death of Elijah's father a year prior and things are starting to come together that might just point to a much larger ring of killers. And let's not forget the neighbor thing, that's always fun.Secret Service Agent Harper goes home to Black Falls for a cooling off period and finds her old flame and military hero Elijah Cameron is her neighbor. She's knee deep in snow, a search and rescue and wondering what the heck she's suppose to do about Elijah. Good times!

I am having Deja Vu with this book. I think I have read this one before, because the characters seem familier. Maybe I read another book from the series? Anyway, the story revolves around Secret Service Agent Jo Harper and Special Forces Sargent Elijah Cameron. Both end up back in their hometowm, Black Falls, VT, at crossroads in their lives. When they were 18 and 19, they had a torrid interlude until caught by Elijah's father. He sent Jo home and kicked Elijah out of the house. He joins the Army and she goes to college and becomes a Secret Service Agent. Their paths have not crossed in the 15 years since. The plot is kinda convoluted. It involves the death of Elijah's father, the murder of an ambassador, a lost 18 year old and who wanted them dead.

There's very little of Carla Neggers' work that I don't like. This is one of her best efforts. She writes a very suspenseful tale with a good bit of romance thrown in to spice it up. Add in her East Coast practicality and you end up with a very fine romantic suspense, filled with well-developed, likable characters and a tightly woven plot. Carla's villains are really well written as well, and these are no exception. She manages to wrap up the plot for this particular story without losing the suspense of the overlying arc for the next two stories in the series. I can't wait to read Cold River!

I liked this book but I didn't love it. It is book one in the new Black Hills series, but at times I felt that I was reading a book later in the series. I enjoyed the characters of Elijah and Jo and I am looking forward to their developing story in the next books. I think my favorite charactor was Grit. He was very real and I admired and felt sympathy for him. I hope he is the focus of future books. The story line was good and loose ends were tied up but just enough was left to lead in to the next novel. Will I be reading the next one? Yep...have to figure out those connections.

How do I begin to describe how awful this book is? I started reading it because the story line intrigued me. However, it read like a rough first draft--the story skipped all over the place, descriptions of place and character were dropped in at random almost as though the author had just remembered to add them. The word "but" starts practically every fourth sentence. Characters hike up and down a mountain at random without accomplishing their stated goals. And the suspense plot line is never wrapped up.

This is a great thriller that set in a Vermont winter, when former high school sweethearts, Jo Harper, now a Secret Service Agent, and Elijah Cameron, a Special Operations Officers, are reunited with old unresolved things, as they pitted into a deadly plot of an ambassador's run and his missing step-daughter, who took off after she heard the news, end up missing in the snow, when someone wants her dead, and strange things add up. Great romance and lots of intense action with an intense and chilly plot, which reminds me of Sandra Brown's Chill Factor. You'll love it.

Like many of Carla Neggers's previous books, this high action adventure is set in the cold North. Her inclusion of the spiritual connection between two individuals who are closely related is true to her normal writing style and well thought out. Unfortuanely, she gives away her antagonist a little too early for my personal taste, yer the use of the audience's knowledge of the "bad guys" does add some to the anticipation. Generally speaking, this is not one of her better books, yet is still a pleasant read for anyone who likes romantic adventure.

I kept getting lost and feeling cold. Funny that happened to the characters as well...I didn't care all that much about them and the inevitable getting together of Joe and Elijah was just too predictable. Maybe if I liked Vermont or the cold or the Secret Service or mountains or...but she writes fairly well and I would try another one of hers -- if they exist. Something else to check out. I wish I were retired, I need more time to read!

Secrets, assassins, old loves, even a ghostThere cliffhangers, which is why 4 stars not 5, but the storyline was a good one. Interesting characters, both major and minor add up to an enjoyable read. You do learn a major bad person in the beginning, but not who they work for or why. Loved the VP's son, and Elijah's friend, hope he gets a happy ending. Will definitely read the rest of the stories to see how it ends.
